Australian Approved Name (AAN): Ethanol

Common names and synonyms: Grain alcohol; Ethanol (96 per cent) – Heading in BP monograph; Alcohol; Ethyl alcohol

Warnings and Restrictions: When used as an active ingredient, can only be supplied as an uncompounded medicine substance packed for retail sale and must comply with an uncompounded substance monograph of the British Pharmacopeia, as in force or existing from time to time.

When the concentration of ethanol from all ingredients in the medicine is more than 3%, the medicine requires the following warning statement on the medicine label:
ETHAN – Contains ethanol or contains alcohol.
